JANUARY
Blank Jan Born in 1564, Shakespeare closely observed the flowers in his native England and used his unique gifts to describe their characteristics and relate them to human experience.

Blank Jan Rosemary has long beenassociated with remembrance and rue, with grace. Shakespeare mentions these herbs in The Winter's Tale and Hamlet, where Ophelia says, "There's rosemary, that's for remembrance... there's rue for you; and here's some for me: we may call it herb of grace."

Jan 5 Twelfth Night is the eve of Twelfth Day (January 6, Epiphany, twelve days after Christmas). Shakespeare's play, Twelfth Night, was probably written to be performed during the Twelfth Night festivities.

Jan 31 "Winter's not gone yet, if the wild-geese fly that way." Shakespeare, King Lear, II. iv.

FEBRUARY
Blank Feb Born in 1819 on Long Island, Whitman published the first edition of Leaves of Grass in 1855. The 1860 edition has a version of "We Two." In the 1867 edition the poem is titled and begins "We two, how long we were fool'd."

Feb 7 "As I sit here in the open air, down in my country retreat, under an old cedar... All is peace." Whitman, Specimen Days, February 7, 1878

Feb 9 "Here, amid this wild, free scene, how healthy, how joyous, how clean and vigorous and sweet!" Whitman, Specimen Days, February 9, 1878

Feb 13 "Saw a large flock of wild geese, right overhead, ... flashing to me such a hint of the whole spread of Nature." Whitman, Specimen Days, February 13, 1880

Feb 20 In 1852 the Springfield Republican published Dickinson's valentine "Sic transit."

Feb. 27 In 1807 Longfellow was born in Portland, Maine. He completed Evangeline on this date in 1847.
