Literary Calligraphy by Susan Loy

Philosophy Selections - "FRUITS OF SOLITUDE"

Susan Loy of Literary Calligraphy in Moneta, VA, joins text from literary classics or Biblical passages with delicate watercolor images and creates a unique bond between fine art and literature.

William Penn, founder of Pennsylvania, referred to his book of maxims, Fruits of Solitude, as a handbook relating to the conduct of human life. The book was originally published in 1693.

Susan chose maxims number 237 through 241 under the subtitle "Temporal Happiness."

"Do Good with what thou hast, or it will do thee no good.
Seek not to be Rich, but Happy. The one lies in Bags,
the other in Content: which Wealth can never give.
We are apt to call things by wrong Names. We will have
Prosperity to be Happiness, and Adversity to be Misery;
though that is the School of Wisdom, and
oftentimes the way to Eternal Happiness.
If thou wouldest be Happy, bring thy Mind to thy Condition,
and have an Indifferency for more than what is sufficient.
Have little to do, and do it thy self:
And do to others as thou wouldest have them do to thee:
So, thou canst not fail of Temporal Felicity"

The artist hand lettered the text in concentric circles, surrounding her watercolor painting of wild plums, Prunus americana. A branch of vivid green leaves supports three bright plums in shades of orange to reddish purple or plum. A bit of bright blue background and a detailed border in shades of reddish brown complete the piece.

Plums played an important role in the diet of early settlers, who found native American plums in every state of the continental U.S. No other native fruit tree is as widely distributed.
