Language of Flowers Selections - "FENNEL: WORTHY OF PRAISE"
Susan Loy of Literary Calligraphy in Moneta, VA, joins text from literary classics or Biblical passages with delicate watercolor images and creates a unique bond between fine art and literature.
Favorite hymn, "For the Beauty of the Earth" extols the glory of the skys... the joy of human love, and surrounds a delicate sprig of fennel in shades of blue, yellow, and light green.
Susan chose four stanzas to fill each of the four corners of the piece and placed the refrain in the innermost circle. The common wild fennel, Foeniculum vulgare, has bright yellow flowers produced in terminal umbels on up to twenty rays. Fennel is often grown for its leaves, seeds, and stems, which taste like anise or licorice.
