Stationery Selections - "2012 CALENDAR"
We are delighted to present our 15th annual Literary Calligraphy® calendar. The theme for 2012 is Words of Wisdom. The calendar includes twelve of Susan Loy's watercolors with prose and poetry that present different expressions of wisdom by featured writers. Each month includes quotations that Susan selected on the monthly themes of self-reliance, time, simplicity, the golden rule, beauty, positive thinking, seizing the day, strength of character, solitude, choices, dreams, and inner gifts. Each month features a different full-page image on the top, with a full-page monthly grid below (including past and future months) providing a perfect combination of beauty and utility. The 12" x 12" format opens to 12" x 24" – large enough to display intricate detail and allow ample room for writing in important dates. In addition to the full quotations for each of the full-page images, you'll enjoy reading the entertaining quotations by selected writers, lunar phases, holidays, previous and next year at-a-glance and other goodies interspersed throughout the calendar grid. We produce the entire calendar in-house and have it printed locally by Bison Printing in Bedford County, Virginia. Our 15th calendar is an economical way to enjoy Susan's past and current art. It will please long-time Susan Loy collectors as well as those just being introduced to her incredible, meticulous art. From the 2012 calendar, Susan explains how she chose the images and provides links to the images elsewhere on our web site (not all calendar images are available as prints):
The year opens with Hamlet and Shakespeare's message of self-reliance, "This above all: to thine own self be true." February features The Spirit Sports with Time and Emerson's commentary on the relativity of time, "The spirit sports with time, can crowd eternity into an hour, or stretch an hour to eternity." The Shaker hymn, Simple Gifts, shown in March, expresses the wisdom of simplicity, "'Tis the gift to be simple, ‘tis the gift to be free." April highlights The Golden Rule and its universal appeal to "do unto others as you would have others do unto you." May features Ode to Beauty and Hopkin's reminder to "give beauty back." Thoughts is the theme for June, with Pansy: Thoughts presenting St. Paul's advice to think about things that are true, honorable, just, pure, lovely, gracious excellent, and worthy of praise. July displays The Salutation of the Dawn, whose ancient Sanskrit wisdom encourages us to seize the day, "Look to this day for it is life, the very life of life." August presents Gladiolus: Strength of Character and Dickinson's prediction that "we never know how high we are till we are asked to rise and then if we are true to plan our statures touch the skies." September extols the benefits of nature and solitude in Yeats's The Lake Isle of Innisfree, where "I shall have some peace there, for peace comes dropping slow, dropping from the veil of the morning to where the cricket sings." October features Frost's The Road Not Taken and its description of life's choices. In The Direction of His Dreams, presented in November, Thoreau urges us to follow our dreams and predicts "a success unexpected in common hours." The year closes with The Angel's Gifts and Fra Giovanni's counsel to "Take Peace!"
