Literary Calligraphy by Susan Loy

Bird Selections- "PURPLE FINCH"

Purple Finch Thoreau's description of the purple finch is one of the reasons Susan Loy started drawing birds "many a serene evening lies snugly packed under those wings." She's delighted to share this quotation with fellow bird lovers as well as Thoreau aficionados.

The purple finch, Carpodacus purpureus, is a North American species; the female is brown, while the male is raspberry-colored in the head, breast and parts of the body. Thoreau knew it chiefly as a traveller, as do most northerners; but it lives throughout the year in the south. Susan painted native species of the pine and cedar : Pinus rigida, pitch pine, and Juniperus virginiana, red cedar; which provide food and habitat for the purple finch.
